What does it mean to be OC Supervisor?

As I campaign across North Orange County, many people ask me what does a supervisor actually do? Of course, people realize it is an elected position, but they are unsure of the position and its responsibilities.

Well, the short answer is supervisors govern the county government; the Board of Supervisors are the regional government, residing between the state government and city government.

The longer, more detailed explanation is California’s counties are governed by county supervisors, who are elected officials who represent the interests of their constituents and make decisions on public policy, finances and public services.

Supervisors are responsible for a variety of duties which directly affect the health and welfare of the public. Below are some examples:

  • First and foremost, a county supervisor represents the interests of their constituents, the people they represent and who elected them.

  • Second, county supervisors set public policy priorities and oversee county programs and departments to ensure they address community needs.

  • Third, county supervisors approve annual budgets which fund various programs and services which are provided to county residents.

  • Fourth, county supervisors oversee various county officers and departments to ensure they are fulfilling their duties, but cannot relieve them of their legal responsibilities.

  • Fifth, county supervisors manage county property and allocate funding for resident services.

  • Sixth, county supervisors serve on various boards and commissions to develop policies and projects which have a countywide impact.

  • Lastly, county supervisors work to ensure cooperation among federal, state and local government agencies in order to best serve our community concerns and needs.

I trust you found this information useful.
